(Update 2) System Failure Briefly Hits JR Group Firms

Tokyo, Feb. 10 (Jiji Press)--A system failure temporarily hit the six Japan Railways Group passenger service firms, including East Japan Railway Co. <9020>, or JR East, on Monday morning.
The problem prevented credit cards from being accepted by vending machines and machines at reservation counters for the purchases of tickets for the day's first and later train services.
The systems were restored at 8:42 a.m. (11:42 p.m. Sunday GMT).
A glitch in the ticket sales system run by Railway Information Systems Co., or JR Systems, was behind the problem, according to JR East and others. A JR Systems official said the company is conducting a detailed investigation, noting that the glitch occurred at its database. It is unlikely that the problem occurred due to a cyberattack, the official added.
The affected JR firms other than JR East were Hokkaido Railway Co., or JR Hokkaido, Central Japan Railway Co. <9022>, or JR Tokai, West Japan Railway Co. <9021>, or JR West, Shikoku Railway Co., or JR Shikoku, and Kyushu Railway Co. <9142>, or JR Kyushu.
