Post-Tax Hike Rebate Program Now Available at over 1 M. Shops

Tokyo, Feb. 12 (Jiji Press)--A temporary shopping rebate program introduced to ease the impact of the Oct. 1 consumption tax hike is now available at over one million shops across Japan, the industry ministry said Wednesday.
The number of such shops stood at about 1.01 million as of Tuesday, up from about 500,000 at the rebate program's start in October.
Shops in tourism-oriented areas seem particularly eager to leverage the rebate program.
The proportion of shops where the program is available was highest in Ishikawa Prefecture, with 11.9 per population of 1,000, followed by Tokyo, with 11.6, Kyoto, with 10.5, Fukui, with 10.3, and Tottori, with 9.9.
Under the program, shoppers are provided with reward points worth up to 5 pct of their cashless payments at small businesses.
