62 Pct in Japan Oppose Casino Resorts: Jiji Poll

Tokyo, Feb. 14 (Jiji Press)--In a recent Jiji Press survey, 62.4 pct of respondents voiced opposition to the government's plan to introduce casino-featuring integrated resorts, or IRs, in Japan.
The proportion far exceeded the share of respondents supporting the plan, which stood at 22.8 pct.
The result highlights ongoing public caution about the plan, even though the government is determined to continue promoting the introduction.
Late last year, House of Representatives lawmaker Tsukasa Akimoto was arrested in a bribery case related to an IR plan. Akimoto, who left the ruling Liberal Democratic Party following his arrest, has since been indicted.
Of LDP supporters, those opposing the introduction of IRs came to 53.2 pct, while 32.7 pct said they support the plan.
