World Closely Watching Fate of Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo, March 21 (Jiji Press)--The fate of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics is attracting worldwide attention as sports events have been canceled or postponed around the globe due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The situation surrounding the Olympics, only four months away from the July 24 opening, has changed in the past 10 days or so, triggered by a comment from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on March 12, Trump suggested the Tokyo Olympics may be delayed for one year because of the growing spread of the virus.
"This is just my idea--maybe they postpone it for a year," Trump said. It was the day after the World Health Organization termed the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic.
Under the current plan, the Olympics alone would bring some 20,000 participants from more than 200 countries and regions to the capital of Japan.
