Calls for Postponing Tokyo Olympics Growing in Japan

Calls for Postponing Tokyo Olympics Growing in Japan

Tokyo, March 23 (Jiji Press)--Calls for postponing the Tokyo Olympics are growing in Japan as the world grapples with the new coronavirus pandemic.
"We are not in a situation to hold the Olympics, at a time when we don't have effective treatment against the virus and infection risks remain," a 47-year-old self-employed man from Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, said while he was strolling around the National Stadium in the same ward.
"The Olympics should be held when athletes and spectators can come to Japan," he said. The stadium is slated to be used as the main venue for the Olympic Games, including for the opening and closing ceremonies.
"The only reason it's being dragged on for so long is because no one wants to take responsibility" for changing the schedule, the man added. "I want (authorities concerned) to quickly start to work on issues related to compensation for losses arising from the postponement."
"As a Tokyo resident, I want the Olympics to be held when everyone can come, rather than holding the games without an audience," company employee Naomi Hatanaka, 52, from Nakano Ward in the Japanese capital, said during her commute to work.
