(Update) Abe Hints at Tolerating Postponement of Tokyo Olympics

Tokyo, March 23 (Jiji Press)--Japan would accept the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics if the International Olympic Committee makes a decision to delay the event amid the global spread of the new coronavirus, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe suggested Monday.
It was the first time for Abe to show a stance of tolerating the postponement of the games.
At an extraordinary teleconference of its Executive Board on Sunday, the IOC agreed to discuss the possibility of postponing the Olympics due to the coronavirus pandemic and reach a conclusion within the next four weeks.
At Monday's meeting of the Budget Committee of the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament, Abe said that the IOC's stance is in line with his policy of holding the Tokyo Games in "a perfect form."
If it is difficult to hold the Olympic Games in a perfect form, "there would be no choice but to make a decision on postponing the quadrennial event by putting athletes first," Abe said. He also said that canceling the Tokyo Olympics, now scheduled to kick off July 24, is not an option.
