Tokyo Games Awaited in Tohoku despite Possible Postponement

Ofunato, Iwate Pref., March 23 (Jiji Press)--Residents in the disaster-hit Tohoku northeastern Japan region voiced hopes on Monday that the Tokyo Olympics will take place even if it were to be postponed due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The Tokyo Games are dubbed "the Reconstruction Olympics" to showcase the progress of recovery in parts of Tohoku ravaged by the massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 and the subsequent nuclear disaster.
The Olympic flame that arrived from Greece is currently on a tour of locations in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima, three Tohoku prefectures hit hardest by the disaster, for special displays as "the Flame of Recovery."
The flame was displayed at an open location in Ofunato in Iwate on Monday, after the International Olympic Committee said it will consider a possibility of postponing the sporting event, now slated to start on July 24.
"Considering the situation, I think postponement can't be avoided," said Yoshinori Sato, 73, a resident of the Pacific coastal city.
