(Update 2) Abe Asked to Consider Declaring State of Emergency over Virus

Tokyo, March 26 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike asked Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday to consider options to combat the novel coronavirus, including declaring a state of emergency.
At her meeting with Abe at the prime minister's office, Koike sought state support for local efforts to contain the virus, including financial assistance. Abe pledged support to the Tokyo metropolitan government.
On Thursday, the Japanese government established a headquarters to oversee the fight against the coronavirus, under a special law that was revised recently to boost efforts to contain the virus.
The launch of the headquarters, which is headed by Abe and comprises all cabinet ministers, is one of the procedures needed to allow the prime minister to declare a state of emergency over the coronavirus outbreak.
At the first meeting of the headquarters, Abe instructed officials to draw up a basic policy on how to prevent an "overshoot," or an explosive rise in coronavirus cases.
