No Immediate Shift to Sept. School Enrollment: Abe

No Immediate Shift to Sept. School Enrollment: Abe

Tokyo, June 1 (Jiji Press)--Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Monday that his government will not immediately adopt a proposed shift of the annual enrollment of students in Japan from the current April to September.
"It's an option, but we won't adopt it prematurely," Abe said at a meeting with officials from Komeito, the coalition partner of his Liberal Democratic Party.
The government has been studying the matter, in light of prolonged school closures this spring amid the coronavirus epidemic.
But the prime minister said, "We may as well consider this separately from the coronavirus."
Komeito urged Abe not to introduce the September enrollment of students as early as next fiscal year, claiming that such an early introduction would do more harm than good.
