Suga to Name Kato as Chief Cabinet Secretary

Tokyo, Sept. 15 (Jiji Press)--New Japanese ruling party chief Yoshihide Suga, who is likely to become prime minister on Wednesday, plans to appoint health minister Katsunobu Kato, 64, as chief cabinet secretary, sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday.
Suga, who was elected president of the Liberal Democratic Party on Monday, plans to keep Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, 64, and land minister Kazuyoshi Akaba, 62, in their posts in his cabinet, according to the sources.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso, 79, and Seiko Hashimoto, 55, minister for the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, are also expected to be retained, the sources said.
Katsuei Hirasawa, 75, a member of the LDP faction led by Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai, and Tetsushi Sakamoto, 69, a member of the faction headed by former Secretary-General Nobuteru Ishihara, will be given a ministerial post for the first time, the sources said.
Norihisa Tamura, 55, is likely to replace Kato as health minister. Tamura, a member of the faction led by former LDP Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba, once served as health minister while being responsible for the LDP's response to the coronavirus pandemic.
