Hokkaido Mulling Asking Residents to Avoid Sapporo Travel

Hokkaido Mulling Asking Residents to Avoid Sapporo Travel

Sapporo, Nov. 16 (Jiji Press)--Hokkaido is considering asking residents to refrain from nonessential travel into and out of its capital, Sapporo, Naomichi Suzuki, governor of the northernmost Japan prefecture, said Monday.
The move comes in response to a recent surge in coronavirus infections in Hokkaido mainly in the Susukino nightlife district of Sapporo.
The prefectural government will issue the request if the risk of infection cannot be eliminated, Suzuki said after a meeting with Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto.
The prefecture is expected to make a decision as early as Tuesday.
In Hokkaido, daily new coronavirus cases started surging again in October, topping 100 since Nov. 5. The prefecture had over 200 new cases for the fourth day in a row on Sunday.
