Japan Discussing Fertility Treatment Subsidy Expansion

Japan Discussing Fertility Treatment Subsidy Expansion

Tokyo, Nov. 21 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government is planning to expand its subsidies for fertility treatment to combat the declining birth rate.
The government is poised to scrap the income cap for receiving the subsidies, currently set at less than 7.3 million yen for the combined incomes of both spouses.
It is also considering raising the subsidy amount from the current level of 150,000 yen per session of treatment in principle and the maximum number of times at which each recipient couple can obtain subsidies from the current six.
The changes will be included in the planned third supplementary budget for fiscal 2020. The focus of discussions now shifts to the exact figures.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is seeking to extend the public health insurance coverage to fertility treatment. The health ministry hopes to expand the subsidy system before his policy target is achieved.
