Tokyo Mulling Asking Govt to Invoke COVID Pre-emergency Steps

Tokyo, April 7 (Jiji Press)--The Tokyo metropolitan government is considering asking the national government to invoke pre-emergency measures against the COVID-19 pandemic in the Japanese capital, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike suggested Wednesday.
The metropolitan government is slated to make a decision on the matter after hearing related experts' opinions at its pandemic monitoring meeting on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Tokyo's daily tally of new coronavirus cases topped 500 for the first time in about two months.
"We should recognize that we're in a severe situation," Koike told metropolitan government officials. "I believe we should begin preparations to ask the national government for pre-emergency measures," she said.
Speaking to reporters later in the day, the governor pointed out that the daily number of new coronavirus cases in the capital is on an uptrend.
