Tokyo to Ask for Coronavirus Pre-emergency Steps: Koike

Tokyo to Ask for Coronavirus Pre-emergency Steps: Koike

Tokyo, April 8 (Jiji Press)--The Tokyo metropolitan government will ask the central government to put the Japanese capital under the novel coronavirus pre-emergency stage, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said Thursday.
Koike announced the plan at the day's meeting for monitoring the infection situation in Tokyo.
The metropolitan government is slated to make the pre-emergency designation request within Thursday, expecting that coronavirus countermeasures under the stage will be implemented in the capital's densely populated 23 special wards and part of the Tama region in western Tokyo.
At the meeting, Koike asked residents to refrain from travel to other prefectures and between urban districts in view of the spread of coronavirus variants in the Kansai western Japan region and elsewhere. She also urged businesses and others to thoroughly promote teleworking.
Participants in the meeting agreed that the infection situation and medical supply system in Tokyo remain at the most serious level on its coronavirus alert scale. An expert warned of "explosive growth in the number of infected people that exceeds the third wave of infections."
