FOCUS: Japan Struggling to Balance Policies toward U.S., China

Washington, April 18 (Jiji Press)--In the face of China's increasingly hegemonic moves, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga worked to demonstrate the strengthening of the Japan-U.S. alliance and build a personal relationship of trust with U.S. President Joe Biden through his first meeting with the president.
While saying that he could feel a good response from the U.S. side in making efforts to achieve these tasks, the prime minister also strived to strike a balance between Japan's policies toward the United States and China, with Tokyo attaching importance to economic ties with Beijing as well.
The difficult challenge of such balancing is expected to continue to agonize Suga at a time when the U.S.-China struggle for global supremacy is intensifying.
