Tokyo Games Viewing Sites Causing Virus Spread Worries

Tokyo Games Viewing Sites Causing Virus Spread Worries

Tokyo, June 9 (Jiji Press)--Some municipalities and others in Tokyo have voiced concerns over the possibility of the novel coronavirus spreading from planned public viewing venues for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.
The prefectural government of Saitama, north of Tokyo, has decided to cancel its plan to set up two public viewing venues in light of the need to reduce infection risks.
Meanwhile, the Tokyo metropolitan government has yet to clarify its response to such concerns. "The metropolitan government should hold a meeting with parties concerned and listen to their opinions," an expert said.
The Tokyo government plans to set up two live public viewing venues in the Japanese capital, where visitors will also be able to try Olympic and Paralympic sports, in cooperation with the Tokyo Games organizing committee. In addition, the metropolitan government will open four public viewing sites on its own.
It has been decided that one of the two joint sites, to be set up at Yoyogi Park in Shibuya Ward, will serve as a COVID-19 vaccination venue during the Olympics. Talks are underway for using the site for public viewing during the Paralympics, as initially planned.
