Tokyo Olympics to Officially Begin Friday

Tokyo, July 21 (Jiji Press)--The Tokyo Olympics will officially kick off on Friday after the world's biggest quadrennial sporting event was postponed by a year for the first time in its history due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Olympics return to the Japanese capital after 57 years at a time when it is placed under a COVID-19 state of emergency.
The Games' opening ceremony will take place Friday night at the newly built Japan National Stadium.
Some 11,000 athletes from 205 countries and regions, as well as a team of refugees, will compete. North Korea withdrew from the event.
COVID-19 cases have been confirmed at training camp sites and the Olympic village since athletes started arriving in Japan earlier this month. As of Wednesday, 75 cases had been reported by the Tokyo Games organizing committee.
