Japan Panel OKs Virus Emergency Extension for 19 Prefectures

Tokyo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press)--A Japanese government advisory panel Thursday morning approved the government's plan to extend its novel coronavirus state of emergency for 19 of the 21 prefectures currently under the measure through Sept. 30.
The panel also approved the government's plan to shift its emergency designation for the remaining two prefectures of Miyagi and Okayama to less strict pre-emergency status, which will be effective also until the end of September.
The government will formally decide the extension at a meeting of its coronavirus response headquarters in the afternoon, to be followed by a press conference by Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
The current emergency designation was to expire Sunday.
Although the number of new infection cases is on the decline, the government believes that medical care systems remain strained, chiefly in Tokyo and other big cities.
