Japan to Certify Supporters to Preserve Terraced Paddy Fields

Japan to Certify Supporters to Preserve Terraced Paddy Fields

Tokyo, Nov. 23 (Jiji Press)--The agriculture ministry has created a system of certifying companies and other organizations that help disseminate information on terraced paddy fields across Japan with features such as superior landscape and natural environment.
The ministry hopes that such supporters will raise the public awareness of terraced paddy fields through publicity on the internet, public relations magazines and events, and contribute to preserving the fields, ministry officials said.
Under the official supporter system, the ministry plans to accept applications by the end of September next year and certify supporters as needed.
In 1999, the ministry selected 134 terraced paddy field areas to ramp up preservation efforts.
There are new initiatives to revitalize terraced paddy fields under a law established in 2019, but some of the fields listed in 1999 have deteriorated due to the lack of people who take care of them.
