Naha, Okinawa Pref., Jan. 13 (Jiji Press)--The southernmost Japan prefecture of Okinawa reported 1,817 coronavirus infection cases Thursday, hitting a record daily high.
The daily figure, which exceeded the previous record of 1,759 cases marked Saturday, nearly doubled from a week before.
Meanwhile, Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said that the number of new cases in the western prefecture is expected to total around 2,400 on Thursday.
It would be the first daily count above 2,000 in the prefecture since Sept. 8 last year and would be up nearly fivefold from a week earlier.
The central prefecture of Fukui also logged a record daily high of 82 cases Thursday. The daily count also hit a record high in the western prefectures of Shimane and Ehime, at 101 and 150, respectively.
