INTERVIEW: DPFP Wants Redistribution for Growth

INTERVIEW: DPFP Wants Redistribution for Growth

Tokyo, June 21 (Jiji Press)--Democratic Party for the People leader Yuichiro Tamaki has highlighted the importance of promoting wealth redistribution to get the economy moving.
The administration of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is "lacking a sense of speed and failing to promote wealth redistribution," Tamaki said in a recent interview held ahead of the July election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of the Diet, Japan's parliament.
Asked to comment on what are major differences of his party's campaign pledges from those of other parties, Tamaki cited such support measures for households as 100,000-yen allowance to all people and cuts in the consumption and gasoline taxes.
Warning about possible consumption contraction and an economic slump caused by inflation and sluggish wage growth, he stressed, "It's important to cover a lack of demand by aggressive fiscal spending."
He also said the DPFP is different because the party believes that nuclear power reactors that have met safety standards should be back in operation and makes a pledge to voters that it will promote the replacement of old reactors with new ones.
