Voters Make Variety of Requests ahead of Upper House Election

Tokyo/Osaka/Naha, June 22 (Jiji Press)--Voters make varied demands ahead of the July 10 House of Councillors election, which comes as Japan is facing wide-ranging challenges from price hikes to recovery of the pendemic-battered economy and increasing threats to national defense.
"With more and more people cutting back on spending because of soaring prices, we're losing our customers," said Mihoko Naruse, 45, who runs a milk delivery shop in the Togoshi Ginza shopping district in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward.
"I want to cast my ballot for those who present sufficient economic measures," Naruse said.
A 50-year-old mother of two children complained that defense spending stands out. "I'll vote for those who put efforts into education," she said.
"I'm really struggling because prices are going up," said an 80-year-old married woman, a resident of Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, who was shopping on the Sugamo commercial street in the capital's Toshima Ward. "I think it's better to increase production of goods that can be produced domestically instead of heavily relying on imports."
