(Update) Foreign Visitors to Japan Rise 15.6-Fold in 2022

Tokyo, Jan. 18 (Jiji Press)--The number of foreign visitors to Japan in 2022 is estimated at 3,831,900, up by some 15.6-fold from the previous year, thanks to Japan's phased easing of COVID-19 border restrictions, government data showed Wednesday.
The 2022 figure is still down 88 pct from the record high of some 31.88 million, set in 2019, before the pandemic, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization.
In December alone, the number of foreign visitors rose by some 1.5 times from the previous month to 1.37 million, some 50 pct of the level in December 2019.
The monthly figure rose for the sixth straight month, partly aided by a weaker yen.
The pace of recovery in foreign visitors has been accelerating thanks to Japan's drastic easing in October of its border control measures, such as removing the daily entry cap and accepting individual tourists from abroad and visa-free visitors.
