Japan Logs Trade Deficit of 897.7 B. Yen in Feb.

   Tokyo, March 16 (Jiji Press)--Japan logged a customs-cleared trade deficit of 897.7 billion yen in February, compared with a deficit of 711.5 billion yen a year before, the Finance Ministry said Thursday.
   The result came against the median forecast of 1,069.4 billion yen in deficit among 18 research institutes surveyed by Jiji Press.
   Exports rose 6.5 pct from a year earlier to 7,654.7 billion yen, and imports grew 8.3 pct to 8,552.4 billion yen, the ministry said in a preliminary report.
   In trade with the United States, Japan's surplus surged 32.7 pct to 530.5 billion yen. Exports expanded 14.9 pct, and imports were up 6.6 pct.
   In trade with mainland China, Japan's deficit rose sharply to 209.8 billion yen from 57.5 billion yen a year before. Exports fell 10.9 pct, while imports inched down 0.6 pct.
