Kishida's New Cabinet Faces Task of Rebuilding China Ties

Kishida's New Cabinet Faces Task of Rebuilding China Ties

Tokyo, Sept. 13 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's new cabinet, launched Wednesday, faces the huge diplomatic task of rebuilding Japan-China relations.
The relations have deteriorated amid China's fierce opposition to Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc.'s release into the sea of tritium-containing treated water from its meltdown-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant in northeastern Japan.
With Kishida ready to seek dialogue with China, the key to improving the ties would be whether the new cabinet can find middle ground with the neighboring country.
"We must continue providing China with a detailed explanation" on the water release, Kishida told a press conference Wednesday.
He also said Tokyo will urge Beijing to scrap immediately a blanket ban on imports of Japanese fishery products, introduced in response to the start of the water release in August.
