FOCUS: Reshuffle Brings Nascent Changes to LDP "Triumvirate"

Tokyo, Sept. 14 (Jiji Press)--The latest shake-up of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's cabinet and the leadership team of his Liberal Democratic Party has brought nascent changes to the "triumvirate" of the ruling party.
Ever since he became prime minister in 2021, Kishida, the LDP's president, has prioritized his three-way cooperation with LDP Vice President Taro Aso and Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi.
With the party faction led by Kishida only the fourth-biggest group within the LDP, cooperation from Aso, who heads the second-largest faction, and Motegi, leader of the party's third-largest group, has been key for Kishida in running his government.
It was Motegi who described the Kishida administration as a "triumvirate," which refers to a group of three individuals holding power in ancient Rome.
The LDP's power structure, however, has been affected by distrust brewing between Kishida and Motegi. A proposal to have Motegi replaced floated within the party in the lead-up to Wednesday's reshuffle.
