Appointment Fuels Speculation over LDP-Komeito-DPFP Coalition

Tokyo, Sept. 15 (Jiji Press)--An unusual appointment by Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has fueled speculation that he is gearing up to add the opposition Democratic Party for the People to the Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito ruling coalition.
On Friday, Wakako Yata, a former lawmaker who previously served as vice president of the DPFP, was named special adviser to the prime minister. It is extremely rare for an opposition party-linked individual to be appointed to the post.
But it is uncertain such a coalition can be formed, given that the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, or Rengo, a major supporter of the DPFP, is against the idea of the party joining forces with the LDP-Komeito pair.
"The prime minister decided (the appointment) based on his policy of putting the right individual in the right post," Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno told a press conference Friday when asked whether Kishida is laying the groundwork to form a three-way coalition including the DPFP.
Matsuno declined to comment any further on the subject.
