37 Pct in Japan Back Opening Up Ride-Hailing Market

Tokyo, June 13 (Jiji Press)--The idea of opening up the ride-hailing market has won support from 37.6 pct of people in Japan, a Jiji Press survey has shown.
The number is for respondents in favor of fully opening the market so that information technology companies and others can begin ride-hailing services, in which ordinary drivers use their own vehicles to transport passengers for a fee.
The poll, conducted for four days to Monday, also found that 28.7 pct opposed the idea. Those who answered that they do not know accounted for 33.7 pct.
The survey also asked about an agreement between Japan and South Korea to implement precautionary measures over an incident in 2018 in which Tokyo accused a South Korean warship of directing its fire-control radar at a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force aircraft. Earlier this month, Tokyo and Seoul agreed to disagree over what happened.
Those who said they do not in any way support the decision to shelve the dispute accounted for 19.1 pct, and those who do not support the decision very much stood at 44.4 pct, showing that more than 60 pct think negatively of that choice.
