3 Years Sought for LDP Abe Faction Chief Accountant

Tokyo, Aug. 9 (Jiji Press)--Public prosecutors demanded Friday that the chief accountant of a Liberal Democratic Party faction once led by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe be sentenced to three years in prison over slush funds created by the largest faction within the ruling party.
In their opening statement at Tokyo District Court, the prosecutors said Junichiro Matsumoto, 76, violated the political funds control law by instructing the faction's member lawmakers not to report kickbacks from the group for their fundraising party ticket sales or direct gains from the sales.
At his first hearing, Matsumoto broadly admitted to the charges while arguing that he was not aware of some of such unreported direct gains.
According to the indictment, the defendant failed to log a total of 675 million yen in the faction's funds reports for 2018-2022.
In a separate trial over unreported funds at the ruling party, a 2-year prison term has been sought for Hitoshi Nagai, 70, who was the accounting manager of former LDP Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai's faction.
