Tokyo Core Consumer Prices Rise 2.4 Pct in Aug.

Tokyo, Aug. 30 (Jiji Press)--Core consumer prices in central Tokyo in August rose 2.4 pct from a year before, mainly due to hikes in rice prices and electricity fees, Japanese government data showed Friday.
The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, stood at 107.9 for Tokyo's 23 densely populated special wards, against the 2020 base of 100, rising for the 36th straight month, the internal affairs ministry said.
Prices of food, excluding fresh food, grew 2.7 pct, with the pace of growth accelerating from the previous month for the first time in 13 months.
Rice prices jumped 26.3 pct year on year, the largest rise since March 2004.
Behind the jump was a decrease in the amount of rice available on the market due to a poor crop in 2023 caused by severe summer heat, as well as higher rice demand from the restaurant industry amid increasing foreign visitors to Japan.
