LDP Pres. Hopeful Hayashi Trusted but Lacks Communication Skills

Tokyo, Sept. 3 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Liberal Democratic Party President hopeful Yoshimasa Hayashi has a good reputation in the government and business circles but lacks communication skills and name recognition compared with other candidates.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi, 63, whose LDP faction led by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has disbanded itself, may not receive the full backing of other lawmakers from the faction, casting doubt about his ability to emerge from the Sept. 27 race victorious.
"I want to conduct politics with affection and compassion, focusing on people-oriented, benevolent politics," Hayashi told a press conference held Tuesday to declare his candidacy in the LDP election. "I will restore politics that people can relate to."
Hayashi first ran for party leader in 2012 when he was a member of the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of Japan's parliament, but he finished in last place.
He later fought against the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for dominance in Yamaguchi Prefecture, their political home turf. He also forced into retirement a veteran lawmaker from the party faction led by former Secretary-General Toshihiro Nikai to secure a seat in the House of Representatives, the all-important lower chamber, in the 2021 general election.
