Japan, S. Korea to Ink MOU on Evacuation Cooperation

Japan, S. Korea to Ink MOU on Evacuation Cooperation

Tokyo, Sept. 4 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese and South Korean governments plan to conclude a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in evacuating each other's nationals from other countries in emergencies, Japanese government sources said Wednesday.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol are expected to agree on the matter at their summit on Friday.
The MOU would be signed by the two countries' foreign ministers. It would be the first time for Japan to ink such a bilateral document.
Japan and South Korea have a history of working together to evacuate their citizens. In April 2023, South Korea helped evacuate Japanese nationals from Sudan. In October the same year, South Korean military and Japanese Self-Defense Forces aircraft transported Japanese and South Korean nationals, respectively, from areas affected by fighting between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas.
Through the MOU, the two governments aim to further strengthen such cooperation.
