LDP Motegi's Pledges Slammed as Rebuff of Kishida Policies

LDP Motegi's Pledges Slammed as Rebuff of Kishida Policies

Tokyo, Sept. 4 (Jiji Press)--Policy proposals by Liberal Democratic Party President hopeful Toshimitsu Motegi have been criticized as a repudiation of policies sought by his boss, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
Motegi, who serves as secretary-general under Kishida's LDP presidency, declared his candidacy Wednesday in the Sept. 27 party election to pick Kishida's successor.
Seen as highly skilled but struggling for support in public opinion polls, Motegi made bold proposals such as pledging not to raise taxes, aiming to gain public approval.
In a press conference Wednesday, Motegi lamented that his last name comes after those of other LDP leadership race contenders in the order of the Japanese syllabary, suggesting this was why public polls showed low support for him.
Views on Motegi are sharply divided within the party. Although he was originally a member of the now-defunct Japan New Party, he climbed to the position of LDP secretary-general thanks to recognition from former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and other heavyweights for his problem-solving abilities.
