Takaichi Announces Bid for LDP Presidency

Takaichi Announces Bid for LDP Presidency

Tokyo, Sept. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japanese economic security minister Sanae Takaichi said Monday that she will run in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's upcoming presidential election.
"I will protect Japan" by beefing up the country's defense capabilities, Takaichi, 63, stressed at a press conference in the Diet building.
Takaichi was the seventh person, and the first woman so far, to formally announce a bid for the LDP presidency this time. Her rivals include former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, 43, and former LDP Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba, 67.
The Sept. 27 leadership election will be the second for Takaichi, known as a vocal conservative. In the previous 2021 election, she was backed by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
At Monday's press conference, Takaichi indicated her willingness to reorganize central government ministries and agencies and abolish additional salaries for the prime minister and cabinet members.
