Japan Producer Prices Up 2.5 Pct in Aug.

Tokyo, Sept. 12 (Jiji Press)--Producer prices in Japan rose 2.5 pct year on year in August, up for the 42nd straight month, but declined 0.2 pct month on month, down for the first time in 10 months, the Bank of Japan said Thursday.
The year-on-year increase slowed from the previous month's 3.0 pct, the first decrease in eight months, due mainly to declines in global commodity prices.
The producer price index, which measures the cost of goods traded between businesses, stood at 123.0 against 100 for the base year of 2020, the central bank said.
Of the 515 items surveyed, 390 saw price increases, while 102 logged falls.
By category, electricity, city gas and water prices jumped 10.6 pct, following the suspension of government subsidies to ease the impact of higher electricity and gas prices. Nonferrous metal prices were up 11.4 pct and chemical products prices up 1.3 pct, with both figures milder than in the previous month, reflecting falls in commodity markets.
