Japanese Workers Turning Their Backs on China after Fatal Stabbing

Beijing, Sept. 25 (Jiji Press)--Japanese companies have increasingly allowed expatriates in China to return home temporarily since the fatal stabbing of a Japanese schoolboy in the country a week ago.
Such companies include Panasonic Holdings Corp., which also decided to shoulder all necessary expenses.
In the wake of the murder of the boy in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, which was preceded by a knife attack against a Japanese woman and her child in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, in June, more and more colleagues have grown reluctant to go on business trips to or stay in the country, a trading house official said.
At a recent meeting with local authorities, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China is believed to have warned of shrinking Japanese business activities, people familiar with the matter said.
"Ensuring the safety and security of our employees is a top priority," an official at a major manufacturer said. "There is no way for our company to take appropriate measures without knowing the motive (for killing the Japanese boy)."
