Japanese Makers Working to Sell Reconditioned Home Appliances

Tokyo, Sept. 25 (Jiji Press)--Major Japanese electronics makers are boosting efforts to sell relatively new home appliances reconditioned after being found with initial defects or displayed at stores.
The efforts are aimed at reducing waste and making effective use of resources. The products are little different in quality from brand-new goods but offered at lower prices. They are seen attracting environmentally conscious consumers.
Panasonic Corp. sells on its official website home appliances that were defective and used only for a short period, displayed at retailers or used in subscription services, after cleaning them and replacing some parts.
Goods on offer include front-loading washer-dryer machines and refrigerators. Microwave ovens and rice cookers joined the lineup this month.
Unlike ordinary secondhand goods, the products come with a one-year manufacturer's warranty. Their prices are low, with front-loading washer-dryer machines priced around 20 pct lower than brand-new items.
