Ishiba Elected New LDP Chief, Certain to Become Prime Minister

   Tokyo, Sept. 27 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Friday elected former party Secretary-General Shigeru Ishiba as its new president, setting the stage for his nomination as the country's new prime minister.
   Ishiba, 67, beat economic security minister Sanae Takaichi, 63, in a runoff in the LDP presidential election to choose the successor to outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
   Ishiba garnered 215 votes, against Takaichi's 194 votes.
   The leadership election went to a runoff as none of the nine candidates, including former Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, 43, won a majority of votes in the first round. Takaichi won the most votes in the first round, followed by Ishiba. Koizumi came third.
