INTERVIEW: Tokyo Gov. Koike Positive about New LDP Head

Tokyo, Sept. 27 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike expressed a positive view on newly elected Liberal Democratic Party leader Shigeru Ishiba on Friday.
"I think he understands (the population problem in the capital) well," Koike said of Ishiba in an interview with Jiji Press. "I don't think he has the view that Tokyo is the villain."
She made the remarks in response to the criticism from the National Governors' Association that Japan's declining birthrate stems from an excessive concentration of population in Tokyo.
Highlighting that the birthrate among married women in Tokyo surpasses the national average, Koike said, "Tokyo is a place where young people gather, and it provides opportunities for encounters."
She expressed her intention to share such data with Ishiba, elected LDP president Friday to succeed outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
