Japan's Jobless Rate Falls to 2.5 Pct in Aug.

Tokyo, Oct. 1 (Jiji Press)--Japan's seasonally adjusted jobless rate in August declined 0.2 percentage point from the previous month to 2.5 pct, after rising by the same margin in the preceding month, the internal affairs ministry said Tuesday.
The improvement came apparently because people who had voluntarily left their jobs in search of work with better conditions found new jobs.
Jobless people decreased by 150,000 to 1.72 million, the ministry said. Of them, the number of those who voluntarily quit their jobs declined by 110,000. The number of people with jobs increased 250,000 to 67.91 million.
The labor ministry separately said that the country's seasonally adjusted effective ratio of job openings to seekers in August dropped 0.01 point month on month to 1.23. Job openings decreased as many companies continued to refrain from hiring due to higher costs caused by rising prices and the yen's weakening.
The ratio represents the number of jobs available to each applicant at Hello Work public job placement centers.
