(Update) Japan's Lower House Dissolved for Election

Tokyo, Oct. 9 (Jiji Press)--Japan's House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament, was dissolved on Wednesday for an election.
The government of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba plans to hold the election on Oct. 27.
Campaigning is expected to focus on efforts to restore trust in politics as the race is the first general election since a high-profile slush funds scandal involving Ishiba's ruling Liberal Democratic Party came to light.
The public will judge whether Ishiba, who took office on Oct. 1, will remain in power. He opted to hold an early election to take advantage of his new administration's sense of renewal, amid strong headwinds against his party.
The dissolution of the Lower House eight days after a prime minister takes office and an election on the 26th are both the shortest in the country's post-World War II history. The previous Lower House election took place in October 2021.
