(Update 2) LDP-Komeito Coalition Set to Lose Majority in Lower House

(Update 2) LDP-Komeito Coalition Set to Lose Majority in Lower House

Tokyo, Oct. 28 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party-Komeito coalition is certain to lose its majority in the House of Representatives in Sunday's general election amid public outcry over the LDP's "slush fund" scandal, dealing a severe blow to Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who took office only this month.
"We faced an extremely harsh public judgment," Ishiba said on television on Sunday night. If the LDP fails to win a Lower House majority on its own, it would be the first time since the 2009 election.
Still, Ishiba signaled his intention to stay on as prime minister, saying, "We must make our utmost efforts to implement policies." Suggesting that he would seek cooperation from some opposition parties, such as the Democratic Party for the People, he said, "I will listen to their opinions if they take a centrist path."
The DPFP, which had seven seats in the 465-seat Lower House before the election, is expected to boost its presence in the all-important lower chamber of the Diet.
The main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan is also projected to significantly increase its Lower House share from its pre-election level of 98 seats.
