Japan Core Consumer Prices Up 2.3 Pct in Oct.

Tokyo, Nov. 22 (Jiji Press)--Japan's core consumer prices in October climbed 2.3 pct from a year before, the internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The core consumer price index, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, stood at 108.8 against the 2020 base of 100, up for the 38th consecutive month. But the pace of increase slowed for the second straight month.
While rice prices marked a record-high increase, government subsidies aimed at curbing electricity and gas bills helped tamp down rising energy prices to some extent.
Prices for food excluding fresh food rose 3.8 pct. Rice prices surged 58.9 pct, reflecting a tight supply-demand balance for the 2023 crop and soaring costs of production and transportation for rice harvested this year.
Prices of confectionery, including chocolate, rose 5 pct on higher raw material prices. Fruit juice prices shot up 29.8 pct due to poor orange harvests in Brazil and the United States.
