Japan Envoy Creates Social Media Buzz for Singing Welsh Anthem

Tokyo, Jan. 10 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Ambassador to Britain Hiroshi Suzuki has grabbed the attention of social media users by singing the Welsh national anthem in Welsh.
Earlier this week, ahead of a Japan-related event in Wales, the video of the Japanese ambassador belting out "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" was posted on X, formerly Twitter, garnering over 8,500 likes as of Friday. Some social media users commented that he had set the bar high for all ambassadors.
The BBC introduced Suzuki's rendition as "the Welsh national anthem as you have perhaps never heard it before."
At the event in Wales, Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan responded by singing the Japanese national anthem "Kimigayo" in Japanese. "Marvelous!!" Suzuki posted on X.
After serving as an executive secretary in charge of foreign affairs to then Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Suzuki was appointed deputy minister for foreign affairs. He went on to become Japanese ambassador to India and Bhutan, before being appointed ambassador to Britain last year.
