INTERVIEW: UNRWA to Be Incapable of Activities after Israeli Ban

Jerusalem, Jan. 29 (Jiji Press)--An Israeli law banning the U.N. Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, from operating in the country may render the agency incapable of continuing activities, UNRWA health department leader Akihiro Seita has said.
Israeli parliament passed the law on Oct. 28 last year to ban domestic UNRWA activities and interactions between Israeli authorities and the agency. The law enters into force Thursday.
According to Seita, international staff at the UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem, which is under Israeli occupation, will be unable to obtain visas and will have to move to Jordan or elsewhere, effectively shutting down the headquarters facility.
UNRWA has made arrangements for local staff to continue their activities in the Palestinian territory of the West Bank, but the stock of medical supplies is expected to last only a few months.
"Imports of medical supplies may not be permitted in the future," as Israel controls the borders, Seita said.
