Tokyo Inflation Rises to 2.5 Pct in Jan.

Tokyo, Jan. 31 (Jiji Press)--Core consumer prices in central Tokyo rose 2.5 pct in January from a year before as rice prices climbed at their fastest pace ever for the fourth straight month, the Japanese internal affairs ministry said Friday.
Core inflation in the Japanese capital's densely populated 23 wards, excluding volatile fresh food prices, thus rose for the third straight month.
The core consumer price index in the area stood at 108.7 against the 2020 base of 100, rising for 41 consecutive months.
The Tokyo index is a leading indicator of nationwide price trends.
Food prices, excluding fresh foods, climbed 4.7 pct. Rice prices surged 70.7 pct because of higher production costs and strong demand.
