Japan's Job Openings Ratio Logs 1st Fall in 3 Years in 2024

Tokyo, Jan. 31 (Jiji Press)--The average ratio of effective job openings to job seekers in Japan in 2024 declined from the previous year for the first time in three years as businesses suffering from higher material costs curbed hiring, labor ministry data showed Friday.
The ratio, which shows the number of jobs available per job seeker registered at Hello Work public job placement offices across the country, came to 1.25, down 0.06 point from 2023.
The number of effective job openings decreased 3.3 pct. Companies including construction firms and manufacturers reduced hiring in the face of rises in material costs.
With higher prices also hitting households hard, the number of effective job seekers rose 1.1 pct.
The country's average jobless rate for 2024 fell 0.1 percentage point to 2.5 pct, the first drop in two years and marking the lowest level since 2019, according to data released by the internal affairs ministry the same day.
