Water Hampers Work to Rescue Driver in Sinkhole near Tokyo

Water Hampers Work to Rescue Driver in Sinkhole near Tokyo

Yashio, Saitama Pref., Feb. 3 (Jiji Press)--Work to rescue a truck driver trapped in a sinkhole in the city of Yashio, Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, has been hampered by water flowing into the affected area.
Debris removal and other work continued on Monday, the seventh day of the rescue efforts, but it is not known when full-fledged work to rescue the 74-year-old driver will start.
His truck was swallowed into the hole, which appeared at an intersection in Yashio on Tuesday as the surface of a road collapsed presumably because of a broken sewer pipe underneath.
While the bed of the truck has been retrieved, the cab, in which the driver is believed to be, remains in the hole.
A slope has been completed to take heavy machinery into the hole for the rescue work. With water flowing in, however, workers have not been able to approach the cab.
