Sao Paulo, Feb 3 (Jiji Press)--A tasting event was held in Sao Paulo in Brazil on Monday to promote Japan-made rice with cheaper production costs.
Japan's agriculture ministry hosted the event in hopes to advertise "strategic rice" to explore the markets of the emerging economies. Its production costs have been reduced by around 70 pct through various efforts including eliminating work to plant rice seedlings into a paddy field.
The ministry last year launched a trial project of growing and exporting such rice by planting rice seeds directly into soil to save water, aiming to promote exports of Japanese rice to emerging markets where rice sales are anticipated to increase in the future.
As Brazil has the world's largest community of "nikkei-jin," or people of Japanese descent outside Japan itself, it is considered a promising market for Japanese rice.
The ministry has held similar tasting events in Kenya and Mexico.
