Japan Real Wages Log 1st Drop in 3 Months in Jan.

Tokyo, March 10 (Jiji Press)--Real wages in Japan declined for the first time in three months in January as inflation accelerated on the back of soaring rice prices and a reduction in government subsidies for gasoline, government data showed Monday.
The inflation-adjusted real wage index fell 1.8 pct from a year before, the labor ministry said in a preliminary report.
Nominal wages per worker rose 2.8 pct, growing for the 37th straight month.
But the consumer price index excluding imputed rent, used to calculate the real wage index, rose at a faster pace than nominal wages, jumping 4.7 pct, the highest increase in two years.
Real wages are unlikely to turn higher during fiscal 2024, which ends this month, unless inflation slows, a ministry official said.
